Can someone please explain to me…

Why Mac will not simply sell their Operating System so that users can install it on their own machines?

I really love the way OS X works, but the frugal little Capricorn inside of me can not bring herself to spend the money on their hardware. Sure, they’ve come down in price, but I can build myself a better machine for much less. I know that there must be a reason behind this, maybe something technical but I can’t seem to find it online.

Seriously, if they just sold their OS the way Window’s does I could see them take over at least half of the market. Instead, I just feel like Apple is being greedy by forcing users to buy their overpriced hardware in order to user their software.

In the meantime, I’m going to hold off on upgrading to Vista even though I really want to play with the new UI. Instead I’m planning on dual-booting my machine with XP and a Linux OS. I’m still confused as to which one I should try, I’m thinking maybe Ubuntu. I know there are some Linux users out there, so let me know what you think would be the best version to try for a Windows gal.
