Thanks to Melle who posted a link to Mark Morford’s blog where he talked about Joss Whedon. Some of you may or may not know this, but I am a huge Firefly as well as Serenity fan and used to be a big Buffy fan (until I went months without cable and lost track of the show). The main reason why I loved these shows and movies so much is because of the female characters. They are strong, smart, sassy and three dimensional. They get angry, amused and horny just like real women. They are leaders that men and women willingly follow. I hate watching shows where the woman can’t function without a man. Where they walk around listlessly with no purpose other then to sigh and bat their eyelashes for the men.
I hate shit like that. I want strong women. Women who are smart, witty and not afraid of their sexuality. Women who can kick ass in a fight and is the hero rather then the victim. I also love men who can accept that and understand, as Joss says, that recognizing someone else’s power does not diminish your own.
It’s a running joke with Gary and I that I will watch any shitty movie if there is a strong female character in it. It’s even better if she’s also doing some high kicks and wielding a super power or a sword. They don’t need to have a weapon or be a super hero it could just be a strong female character in our daily society. It’s probably one of the reasons why I love comic book movies because usually there are strong female characters in them.
So without further ado, here is a video clip from an Equality Now ceremony where Joss Whedon is being honoured. He is being introduced by Meryl Streep (which reminds me…I actually want to go and see The Devil Wears Prada)
